Summer ‘26 Trek: Day 6: Great Sand Dunes National Park

Odometer: 1,322 miles. Today: 250 miles.

Saydee reminded us that we needed to look at the sand dunes at sunrise, and we were soon off on the one-mile hike up to the Dunes Viewpoint. The peace and solitude made the view extra special. Intermittent clouds continuously changed how the sun lit the dunes and we just sat and watched them for a while.

Saydee quickly learned to avoid the spiky things!

Next, Arvan took us to the “Dunes Parking.” We enjoyed the views, but decided that dune climbing and sledding wasn’t our thing. We can’t do everything on Samuel’s bucket list!

Having made the most of the coolest part of the day, we loved how we could fix a cooked breakfast in the van and take showers in the parking lot. Then, we were ready for our four hour drive, plus a few tasks like finding some DMC800 needlepoint thread, and fixing the inaugural chip in our windshield!

We passed Mt Culebra, a 14er in the clouds.
Someone found their DMC800 thread and was a happy camper!

Through a group called “Boondockers Welcome,” we’d found a place to stay about 15 minutes from Samuel’s place in Golden. It was really cool to just stay on someone else’s driveway in a lovely quiet suburban neighborhood. A BBQ joint was in walking distance and it was great eating outside and enjoying the Denver vibes.

A simple but great place to stay – “boondocking.”
Yummy!

"Cajunlimeys" combines Lousiana (Janet) and Britain (Peter). British sailors in the 19th century were nicknamed "limeys" as they drank lime juice to prevent scurvy. However, while Janet is a fine cook, she has no Cajun blood, but the name fit. We love adventures and use blogging to write a photo diary to preserve our memories. Some crazy friends enjoy following us, and my notes might help others plan.
