Summer ‘26 Trek: Day 5: Wilderness

Odometer: 1083 miles. Today: 127 miles.

A tame American Robin helped bring in the chilly morning. After we moaned a bit about the cold, we remembered we could put on some heating!

Our campground was perfectly located near the trailhead for our morning jaunt into the wilderness.

The Wilderness brings a special type of solitude, as powered equipment is not allowed. It takes special craftsmen to build robust bridges, with precut material carried in on pack animals.

An impressive bridge.

Saydee and I enjoyed exploring a “cave,” which was an old, straight mineshaft, though we didn’t go too far as we’d left Janet at the entrance and the cougar warning signs had made her nervous.

The well-graded trail made for easy walking, and we spotted one flower we had not seen yesterday.

We loved the chipmunks scurrying around the campsite, with Saydee surprisingly chill about them. Soon we were ready to head north into Colorado and our next destination.

We arrived in Colorado.

Blanca Peak greets us as we enter Colorado.

Onward to Great Sand Dunes National Park. We enjoyed a chill evening enjoying the view!

"Cajunlimeys" combines Lousiana (Janet) and Britain (Peter). British sailors in the 19th century were nicknamed "limeys" as they drank lime juice to prevent scurvy. However, while Janet is a fine cook, she has no Cajun blood, but the name fit. We love adventures and use blogging to write a photo diary to preserve our memories. Some crazy friends enjoy following us, and my notes might help others plan.
