England with the Sems and Townsends: A Prelude

This is a prelude to our next trip. Please follow us on this adventure by subscribing so you are the first to read about what we are up to. If you know Dean or Max, you know there will be mischief.

This is a three-stage adventure with Dean and Tracy Townsend and Stephanie and Max Sems. Janet became great friends with Tracy and Stephanie when they taught together, and the guys have followed their lead in friendship. Dean and Tracy joined us for our Coast to Coast walk in July 2022; below is a link to that trip’s most memorable day. Remarkably, they want to join us again!

Stage 1: Hike the Cotswold Way

For the first part of the trip, we will hike part of the Cotswold Way. This is a National Trail that winds through small villages in the beautiful English countryside. I’ll be writing about our adventures with sheep and cows, wheat fields and escarpments, pubs, historic buildings, and tearooms. The terrain will be gentler than on the Coast to Coast and the weather less wild, but the scenery will be fantastic and I am confident that writing about this group will lead to some entertaining reading. Janet and I walked the first half of this trail in August 2023 and we look forward to picking up where we left off in Painswick (see below).

Stage 2: Cruise the Kennet and Avon Canal

The Kennet and Avon Canal, west of London.

After walking over fifty miles, we look forward to spending some relaxing days boating, allowing recovery before some intense days in London. We will sleep several nights on the 69-ft Yellow Warbler narrow boat and cruise through the English countryside operating locks and bridges, crossing over aqueducts, and mooring for the night by a pub or a field. The boat has a maximum speed of about 3 mph and the captains require no previous experience. Our family greatly enjoyed a previous trip on the Llangollen canal in May 2011. Who will fall in first? Or will they be pushed…

Our boat’s layout. We are wondering who will snore the loudest and keep everyone else awake.

Stage 3: London

After the boat, we’ll head to London for a few days, stopping to check out Stonehenge on the way. Janet and I are eager to show off London’s sights to our first-time visitors, from Changing the Guards at Buckingham Palace, to the Millennium Bridge made famous by Harry Potter and offering fabulous views of St. Paul’s Cathedral. London is a walking city and Janet has a full itinerary to show off as much of it as possible. I have a few extras sights, from the water pump that helped discover Cholera in Soho in 1854 to a sewer lamp from the late 19th century that still burns sewer gas. Max and I plan a research visit to the Royal Geographical Society to check out all things associated with the Amazonia explorer Colonel Percy Fawcett, popularized in the film The Lost City of Z. We will probably walk greater distances in London than we did in the Cotswolds!

The Millenium Bridge. Fortunately, it wasn’t actually destroyed, though it is known as the “wobbly bridge” because it wobbled too much when first opened, leading to closure and installation of dampeners to absorb oscillations.

We are thankful for our kids who will be looking after our pets and houses during our trip.
