The Ask

For several months, Samuel had been reflecting about where to propose to Kylie. Having been dating since high school, Samuel’s two and a half years at university in Colorado had cemented their love of mountains with Kylie’s visits to Samuel in Golden. Visiting Banff was already on our bucket lists, and a visit during Samuel’s Fall Break from classes coincided with Banff’s less-crowded shoulder season and gave Samuel the opportunity. Janet built an itinerary, and Samuel chose Lake Louise as the idyllic location for his most important question.

My first photo of Samuel with Kylie is from when Samuel took her to prom in April 2022.

Logistics led to The Ring being at our house in Houston, but fortunately, I was hiking with Samuel over a long weekend just before our trip to Banff, so I could take The Ring to him. I was very glad to hand it over! However, my greater responsibility was official photographer of The Ask.

Instagram makes Lake Louise look ideal, with snow-capped mountains reflecting perfectly off the blue lake. We had chosen our visit to be at sunrise, to “watch Victoria Glacier turn pink.” However, heavy snow made our morning’s drive in the dark even more interesting. I was relieved we made it to Lake Louise. While Samuel seemed very relaxed about his task, and we had succeeded in keeping Kylie oblivious, I was nervous about the photos! I tried my best in the predawn light.

The Lake Louise boathouse was a fine subject.
Kylie looked ambivalent while Samuel was wondering how he was going to propose in a blizzard! I was worried about the light!
The hotel provided warm lighting, but that was not the plan.
Samuel gave me the nod, and he started his intimate speech.
Good form!
Tears of joy!
Relief!

Bailey helped with the photos of The Ring.

The snow lessened and the sun rose, helping the light for some group photos.

The trip allowed me to get several other photos of the happy couple.

We are so happy for Samuel and Kylie, and that Kylie will be joining our family.
