Diving Mexican Cenotes in May 2021

During a family trip to Cancun, Samuel and I very much wanted to dive cenotes. Cenotes are a form of cave in which you are always able to see some daylight so the qualification required is less than cave diving. We chose Wetset divers who were very responsible, and we had to do a day of ocean diving with them first before heading to the cenotes. Unofficially, they are assessing your capability. We dove the cenotes with Felicity, who moved to Cancun from Australia specifically to dive the cenotes. She asked us if we had any preference about which cenote to dive, but we followed her guidance. I remember her wisdom, “I didn’t do all of this cave diving training to be hit in the face by snorkelers.” The diving did not disappoint and we had the most memorable time.

For the ocean dives, we dived the C56 wreck and Finger Reef. We were accompanied by a group of Divemaster trainees, but we were able to enjoy our chill dives. The following day, we dived Kulukcan Cenote, Little Brother, and Taj Maha. The environments were fascinating due to the darkness, and the fresh/salt water boundaries that did strange things. The water was very clear and cold. We were unable to take photos in the first two cenotes but made the most of Taj Maha, though the lighting made good photos difficult. These dives took Samuel past 50 dives, completing the requirements for his Master SCUBA Diver certification.

I used the GoPro software to make a video of each of the two days:

If would be fun to return!
