The catalyst for Samuel to learn how to dive was a trip to Florida’s Seabase with scouts in March 2019. These were his first dives after qualifying the previous year. Seabase’s setup was very good for new divers. Our instructor, Dale Davis, a former air traffic controller with the air force, was fantastic both as a dive instructor and as a mentor for young scouts. We completed eleven dives to approximately 30 ft over six days.
I rented a GoPro to take some photos, but my lack of experience shows. The video and photos are memories rather than National Geographic. One of the most memorable dives was the nightdive, of which there are no photos. A turtle appeared suddenly out of the darkness and scared the wits out of us. During the dive, the wind picked up and there was a swell which made it very difficult to get back into the dive boat. Indeed, if it had been that rough at the beginning of the dive, they would have cancelled it.
