TN Day 7 – Nashville Biscuits, Murals, and The Listening Room

We experienced a fine assortment of Nashville’s best, showcasing different types of artistry. While I write this, much of Houston is without power after a devastating storm last night and we pray for your safety and recovery.

Janet’s plan took us to Biscuit Love in The Gulch. It is a recently redeveloped area with new apartments blending with the old warehouses and great views of downtown. As the restaurant’s name suggests, there was a southern theme and Janet and I enjoyed a Southern Bennie which was an eggs Benedict with sausage gravy. We have learned to share such things!

Having savored local culinary artistry, we wandered around The Gulch to check out some murals.

Good boy.
Jimi Hendrix was not an Aggie.
For those who need to go (not a mural…)

We went separate ways for the next experience. While Bailey and Jett checked out the Country Music Hall of Fame, the rest of us explored central Nashville, starting with the pedestrian bridge over the river and then checking out some geocaches to take us to interesting sites like Printers’ Alley.

The Tennessee Titans’ Stadium dominates the East River.
Downtown and Broadway on the West side.
I loved the boat-shaped concrete blocks on the bridge.
Geocache found!
An American Robin is unfazed by the traffic on a swollen Cumberland River.
Lots of interesting little places in Printers’ Alley, including an English Pub named after London’s printing district on Fleet Street, where my uncle used to work. This was just around the corner from a site recognizing a fort that was used in the revolutionary/independence war in 1777.

We all met up again before our next experience which was a very different pace – an owl sanctuary. Its location in suburban Brentwood led us past many beautiful properties – reportedly where the music stars live. The sanctuary was cool too, with five rehabilitated owls and a large reserve.

A pair of Eastern Screech Owls
A Barn Owl
A Great Horned Owl.

Not just owls:

A common whitetail dragonfly. There was a near-swarm of them by a pond.
This silvery checkerspot butterfly liked to land on Janet.

After a nap, we headed to The Listening Room Cafe for dinner, where singer-songwriters showcase their work. We were given a real treat, sitting right next to the stage while three songwriters told us about the number one hit songs they had written for the stars, which they then played. It was just three guys with their acoustic guitars and microphones with a couple of hundred people in the audience. They told stories of how they wrote songs for the likes of Garth Brooks and Reba McIntyre and then they played the songs. The talent was unbelievably raw and accompanied good food. While I barely recognized the names of the stars and did not recognize any of the songs (though Samuel is now quite the country music fan, thanks to Kylie), it was a wonderfully inspiring evening.

There was a recording studio nextdoor to the Listening Room with another great mural. Bailey and Jett were all dressed up for an evening on Broadway.
Samuel and Kylie looking pretty good too.
Just three guys singing with their guitars. James Leblanc, Philip White, and Brice Long. You’ve probably never heard of them, but if you listen to country music, you have certainly heard their songs.
Half way through their set, Philip (in the middle) needed a bathroom break so he called up James Leblanc’s wife Angela Hacker, who won Nashville Star in 2007. It did not appear planned but they spontaneously sang hits like I Ain’t Easy to Love. I forgot to get her photo!

After a fine evening, we let Bailey and Jett experience Broadway’s rooftops while the rest of us went home to watch Footloose, feeling obliged to choose a film about music!
