TN Day 2 – Birds, Anakeesta, and Bears

I spent a relaxed morning photographing birds while waiting for fine breakfast tacos from Bailey and Jett.

A Mourning Dove enjoyed our telegraph wire.
What a vocal little Wren you were.
I got the female Cardinal this time.
The male was closeby.
This Northern Flicker was rather elusive, but a splash of red on the back of his neck caught my eye.
The Mourning Doves cooperated with the photographer

Then the vulture swooped by, never landing as he soared circles continuously while looking for, but not finding some carrion for breakfast.

The next door’s sign made us hopeful for a sighting, while we locked more than just our car doors.

Bear-proof cages for the trash cans.

Then it was off to Anakeesta. It is a low-key theme park on the top of a hill with great views. There are lots of rope walks and a couple of rides, all of which was fun and relaxing with the great views.

Taking the chairlift up the mountain.
Enjoying the view with the crisp non-Houstonian air
Bailey took the prize for being most excited by the ride.
A tree walk was fun and reminded us of New Zealand, so we will have to return tonight.
We were treated with a bear sighting below the tree walk, though unfortunately he did not climb up and say hello. We saw a couple of others at Anakeesta which is normal as they have 8-9. Though when Bailey visited in early March, she saw none, so perhaps they were hibernating then.

It only takes 2-3 hours to do what we wanted at Anakeesta which gave us time to go back to the house and chill. The pace of this trip is pleasantly slower than normal – I need to let Janet plan them in future! I grilled steaks for dinner, but I was too focused on the task for any photos. Bailey was also focused – on her potato!

But then we were treated by a visitor. We heard something rummaging in the undergrowth and then our visitor came all the way up to the house. I’m guessing he has been fed in the past or could smell the steaks. He hung out for a while without getting a snack before heading up the hill to find the next visitor to beg from.

Who needs to go to a zoo, or Baylor, to see bears!

Then it was back to Anakeesta for our tree walk at dusk.

Amazing concentration to get off the chair lift.
Fun in a small ropes course
Some of us took the easier route!
The sky walk beckoned.
It was cool in the lit trees.
The view of Gatlinburg from the descending chairlift was one of the best of the day.
